Biography
I grew up in Deep Run, North Carolina and have spent all of my life in music. I began studying the piano at age 7. My teachers introduced me to Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. Soon I was playing hymns on piano and organ at my church - the First Baptist Church Of Deep Run. I accepted Christ there at age 13 and was baptized soon afterwards.
By my early teens I was always involved with a garage band playing and singing Motown and Beatles music. When I began composing music and writing songs my father took notice. He began to manage my bands and promote my songs. At 14 I became involved with a square dance and country band and found myself writing country tunes. My father took some of these tunes to Nashville, found an interested publisher, and by the time I was 18, I had written songs recorded by Mel Tillis, Eddy Arnold and George Hamilton IV. I moved to Nashville to attend George Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University) and pursue a songwriting career. During my third year of college, I auditioned for and was hired to travel and perform with Charley Pride. Eventually I became his music director. I performed concerts and TV appearances with him throughout the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe for a few years. Eventually I grew weary of traveling and settled in Charlotte in 1983. I still perform weekly throughout the Charlotte area for wedding receptions and corporate events. Over the past 20 years I've come to specialize in computer music composition. My wife Cheri and I have raised 5 children together.
